Compare the beginning of an about 1300 years older four-line poem:
前不见古人，后不见来者 (ahead i do not see the people of yore,
behind i do not see the generations of the future).
At the time all four lines usually counted 5 or 7 characters.

前不见古人，后不见来者 (voor zie ik niet de mensen uit de oudheid,
achter zie ik niet degenen die nog komen zullen).
Gewoonlijk telden alle vier regels 5 of 7 karakters.
